Hi there,
Since the doctors advised to rest her knee, it indicates a ligament damage. Other more serious injury such as meniscal tear, bursitis, dislocated knee cap, etc may require more attentive treatment.
Back problem, such as disc protrusion in the back, can cause knee pain as well because the nerves that send the sensation of pain to the legs and feet are located in the lower back region. As people age, the discs between the vertebrae (commonly the 2nd, 3rd and 4th lumbar) can buldge out and press on these nerves causing knee pain.
