Uric acid is a chemical created when the body breaks down substances called purines. When the body produces too much uric acid or does not remove enough of it, you can get sick. When uric acid accumulates, uric acid crystals (monosodium urate crystals) can become deposited in the tendons and joints causing pain and discomfort.
Purines can be found in almost all foods. Some food such as sardines, mussels, mackerel or yeast contains high level of purines.
